Stroke order does visible work

Stroke order is not ceremony. It decides where strokes begin and end, which decides how they meet, which decides whether a character looks composed or assembled.

The general rules cover most cases: top before bottom, left before right, horizontal before crossing vertical, outside before inside, and closing an enclosure last. They are conventions rather than physics, and they are standardised, which is why dictionaries and handwriting recognition expect the same sequence.

Fixing handwriting that is already established

Adults arriving with years of self-taught habits have a different problem from beginners, and it is solvable.

Diagnose before drilling. Write ten characters you use often, put them beside the printed forms, and identify the pattern rather than the instances: is it size, proportion, stroke order, or spacing? One pattern usually explains most of what looks wrong.

Fix one thing at a time. Trying to correct size, proportion and order simultaneously produces slow, self-conscious writing that improves nothing. A fortnight on proportion alone, then a fortnight on order, works better.

Expect stroke order to be the hardest to change, because it is the most automatic. A wrong sequence learned through hundreds of repetitions needs deliberate slow practice to replace, and it will revert under speed until the new sequence has had comparable repetition.
