A radical is the component under which a kanji is traditionally filed, and in everyday use the word covers something broader: the recurring parts kanji are built from. That second meaning is the one that matters for writing, because a kanji you can break into familiar parts is a short assembly rather than a picture with fourteen strokes.

What a radical actually is

Strictly, the radical is the indexing component. Paper dictionaries organise kanji under a set of traditional radicals, and each character is filed under exactly one of them, which is why every kanji has a radical in the singular.

Loosely, and far more usefully, people say radical to mean any recurring component: 亻, 氵, 木, 心, 言, 糸. Most kanji contain several, and only one of them is the dictionary’s index.

For a learner the strict definition matters when you are looking a character up in a printed dictionary, and the loose one matters every other day, because it is what makes characters learnable. Nothing is lost by using the word loosely as long as you know the distinction exists.

Semantic and phonetic parts

Most kanji are compounds of a meaning hint and a sound hint, a structure inherited from Chinese.

The meaning hint places the character in a category. 氵 signals water or liquid, which is why it appears in 海 sea, 池 pond and 泳 to swim. 言 signals speech, appearing in 語 language, 話 talk and 読 read. 木 signals trees and wooden things.

The sound hint suggests the on reading, the pronunciation borrowed from Chinese. 青 sei appears in 清 sei, 晴 sei and 静 sei, all sharing a reading. This works often enough to be a genuine tool and not so reliably that it can be trusted blindly, because Japanese borrowed readings at different periods from different regions.

Two cautions. The meaning hint gives a category, not a definition. And the sound hint applies to on readings rather than kun readings, which come from native Japanese words and follow no pattern from the character’s shape.

Why this matters more for writing than for reading

Recognition can work from partial information. Seeing 語 in a sentence, you can identify it from the overall shape and the context without consciously noticing 言 on the left.

Production has no such shortcut. To write 語 you need every part and their arrangement, which is why learners who read comfortably often cannot write, and why component knowledge is the specific tool that closes the gap.

The error pattern gives it away. Someone who memorised shapes writes the right parts in the wrong arrangement, or substitutes a similar-looking component. Someone who learned the structure does not make those mistakes, because they are assembling rather than recalling a picture.

The components worth learning first

Around ten cover a large share of what a beginner meets, and each is worth learning as a standalone kanji where one exists, since the compressed form inside a character then reads as a variant rather than as a new shape.

亻 from 人, person. 氵 from 水, water. 木 tree. 口 mouth. 日 sun. 月 moon, and also a flesh component in body-related kanji, which is a useful thing to know early. 糸 thread. 言 speech. 手 and its compressed form 扌, hand. 心 and 忄, heart or feeling.

Learn them in the characters you are already studying rather than as a separate list. A component met inside three kanji you use is remembered; a component memorised from a chart is not. The characters worth starting with are the ones on the jōyō list, the general-use standard, since their components are the ones that recur most.

Using radicals to look kanji up

This is where the strict definition earns its keep. If you meet a kanji in print and cannot type it, radical lookup is how you find it: identify the indexing component, count its strokes, then find the character by its remaining stroke count.

Digital tools have largely replaced this with something better. Multi-radical search lets you select several components you can see and narrows the results, which is far more forgiving than guessing which single part is the official index. Handwriting input is better still when you can approximate the shape, and it has the side effect of testing whether you can produce it.

The traditional method is still worth understanding, because dictionaries, learning materials and character databases are organised around it. The Unicode Han database documents how characters are catalogued, including their radical assignments, which is the same system in machine-readable form.

Two components that cause specific confusion

Some parts are worth flagging early because they reliably mislead.

月 is two different things. As a standalone kanji it means moon, and inside many characters it is a flattened form of 肉, flesh, which is why it appears in body-related kanji such as 腕 arm, 肝 liver and 胸 chest. Both look identical in modern print, and knowing that the body-related ones are not about the moon removes a lot of confusion.

The heart component changes shape by position. 心 sits at the bottom, as in 思 and 恵, while 忄 sits on the left, as in 情 and 快. They are the same component with different forms, and treating them as unrelated doubles the work for no reason.

The same positional compression applies broadly: 水 becomes 氵 on the left, 手 becomes 扌, 火 becomes 灬 at the bottom. Learning that components compress predictably depending on where they sit is one of the highest-value observations available, because it converts what looks like dozens of separate shapes into a handful of parts with positional variants.

Handwriting research suggests this kind of structural learning pays for production specifically rather than just for recognition. A study measuring brain activity found words learned by handwriting were encoded more strongly than the same words typed, which fits the pattern that assembling a character by hand from known parts leaves a stronger trace than seeing it does.

What component knowledge does not solve

It does not give readings. A kanji’s on and kun readings have to be learned per character and per word, and the phonetic hint helps only with on readings and only sometimes.

It does not replace production practice. Knowing that 語 is 言 plus 五 plus 口 does not mean you can write it under time pressure; that comes from writing it from memory repeatedly. Structure lowers the cost of each repetition rather than removing the need for them.

And it does not apply evenly. Some kanji do not decompose usefully, some semantic components are historical rather than intuitive, and forcing a story onto a character that has none produces a mnemonic more complex than the character itself. Expect a minority to remain shapes you simply memorise, and treat that as normal rather than as a failure of the method.

A worked decomposition

One example carried through shows what the whole approach buys.

Take 議, meaning discussion or deliberation, at twenty strokes one of the more intimidating characters a learner meets early in formal vocabulary.

Structure first: left-right. On the left is 言, speech, which places the character in the same family as 語, 話 and 読. That alone tells you the meaning involves language.

On the right is 義, which is itself a known character meaning righteousness or justice, and which supplies the on reading gi. So 議 is gi, and 会議 is kaigi, a meeting.

Written as a structure, 議 is two familiar pieces in a standard arrangement. Written as a picture, it is twenty strokes with nothing to hold on to. That difference is the entire practical argument for learning components, and it grows rather than shrinks as the characters get harder.

How to use components in daily practice

Three habits turn structural knowledge into writing ability rather than trivia.

Name the parts before writing. Five seconds, out loud or silently: “speech on the left, that known character on the right.” This is what stores the kanji as an assembly, and it costs almost nothing once it becomes automatic.

Decompose the ones that resist. When a character keeps failing, look up its components once and write the structure in a single line, then attempt it again from a prompt. Two minutes converts a stubborn shape into a member of a family, and most stubborn characters turn out to contain one component you had never actually identified.

Keep a short list of the components you keep getting wrong, rather than of the characters. Errors usually cluster: the same four or five parts appearing in different combinations. Fixing a component fixes every character containing it, which is a far better return than fixing characters one at a time.
